Advances in trucking technology –  such as “supertrucks,” electric vehicles, and semi-autonomous platooning – could lower trucking’s cost of doing business substantially within a decade.

Coupled with door-to-door service, quicker delivery times, and better on-time performance, trucking could challenge a large share of railroad markets. To address this threat, railroads will need to do more than simply keep up with trucking technology changes: they will need to “disrupt from within” to become more resilient, market-responsive, and future oriented.
