As the effects of the climate crisis intensify, more companies are stepping up their efforts to reduce emissions. But commitment alone isn’t enough — real progress depends on action grounded in science. That’s where the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) plays a critical role.
SBTi helps companies set emissions reduction targets that are backed by the latest climate science and aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement. These targets provide a clear and measurable way for businesses to act on climate change while maintaining both credibility and transparency. By translating ambition into tangible goals, SBTi is shaping a global movement of science-driven climate leadership.
This work reflects Oliver Wyman’s values and the meaningful impact we can have in helping companies address climate changeBruno Despujol, Partner, Oliver Wyman
To help the organization expand its impact and plan for the future, we partnered with SBTi to develop its Impact Growth Plan. This strategy was structured around three core elements, each designed to support informed decision-making and sustainable long-term growth.
First, we developed a detailed analysis of SBTi’s reach as of the end of 2024. This included data on companies with committed or validated targets, segmented by revenue, emissions, market capitalization, industry sector, and geography. The result was a clear snapshot of the current portfolio and its global distribution, offering a data-driven foundation for future planning.
Second, we created projections for SBTi’s growth through to 2030. These forecasts revealed how adoption of science-based targets is likely to accelerate across regions and industries, helping the initiative anticipate future demand, plan resources, and stay ahead of evolving trends.
I’m inspired by the impact we achieved on the SBTi projects. It’s been rewarding to contribute to meaningful climate action and support companies on this journey, all within a truly collaborative and purpose-driven environmentHéloïse De Paulou Massat, Principal, Oliver Wyman
Third, we identified key strategic levers to increase SBTi’s reach and effectiveness. These included enhancing internal systems, expanding outreach efforts, and building stronger partnerships to bring more companies into the fold.
The outcome is a practical, forward-looking roadmap that strengthens SBTi’s ability to scale its mission. With clearer insights and a stronger strategy, SBTi is well-positioned to support more companies in taking science-aligned action to combat the climate change emergency.
